About the Author

John of Ripa (fl. 1350 ca.)

In the second Distinction of his commentary on the First Book of the Sentences, Giovanni da Ripatransone (Iohannes de Ripa) displays his innovative approach to philosophical questions, notably in the field of logic. Influenced by new discoveries in mathematics and the physical sciences in the mid-14th century, the Doctor Difficilis enters into lively debate with the works of John Duns Scotus, Francesco of Appignano (Marchia) and William of Ockham, among others.
