Francis of Assisi (1181/2-1226)

The Poverello of Assisi, founder of the Friars Minor, collaborator of Clare of Assisi, and guide for brother and sister penitents, was an effective preacher, a composer of poetic texts in early Italian vernacular, and a writer of Latin prayers, rules, letters and exhortations over a period of twenty years. He was canonized by Gregory IX in 1228.
